The scholastic pathways of the Pickerington Local School District's class of 2027 can begin to take shape this week, after the district opened kindergarten registration.
Kindergarten registration opened Wednesday, March 12, for all prospective students who will turn 5 years old by Aug. 1.
For the first time, the district is registering kindergarten students online. The move was made, district officials said, to improve efficiency for both parents and school staff.
"They're going to complete the registration online and then call our Welcome Center," said Sharon Caccimelio, district director of teaching and learning.
"Then, they'll set up an appointment to provide all the necessary papers."
Registration can be completed via a "Kindergarten Registration" link on the district's website www.pickerington.k12.oh.us.
In addition to the registration form, which can be completed and submitted online, a list of paperwork required for appointments at the Welcome Center is provided via the website.
Caccimelio said the online system should help with appointment scheduling, while also ensuring parents bring the necessary materials to the Welcome Center.
"The old way was to do everything at the Welcome Center," she said. "It was really time consuming."
The registration process allows parents to select a morning or afternoon kindergarten preference for their children.
Depending of the volume of requests, a lottery will be held to determine which daytime slot children will attend.
"To be considered for the lottery, all necessary forms must be submitted by May 2, 2014," the district website states.
Additionally, the Bracken School Readiness Assessment will be administered to incoming kindergarten students May 7, 8, or 9. Parents will sign up for the screening during their Welcome Center appointment.
Caccimelio said parent meetings for incoming kindergarten students will be held at each building prior to the start of school in August.
Dates and times for these orientation-style events will be posted on the district's website in the future.
