Legion plans Memorial Day observance

Pickerington American Legion Post 283 will pay tribute to America's fallen heroes on Memorial Day, Monday, May 26.

The day of remembrance will commence at 9 a.m. with a ceremony in Violet Cemetery at 9 a.m. led by the Post 283 Honor Guard.

"When we complete that ceremony at 9:30 a.m. we will then march down to Victory Park (in Pickerington) where we do a ceremony there," said David England of Post 283.

At 10:30 a.m., the Honor Guard, Legion members and the general public will convene at Glen Rest Cemetery in Reynoldsburg to honor three fallen heroes.

Cpl. David A. Johnston, Post 283's namesake and a graduate of Pickerington High School, was killed in action in Vietnam in March 1969.

Johnston was a member of the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Division.

Cpl. Dustin Derga, Lima Co., 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine Division, was killed in action in Ubaydi, Iraq. Derga was also a Pickerington High School graduate.

Also honored will be Pfc. Terry Parsons.

Pickerington Post 283, 7725 Refugee Road, will host its own 1 p.m. ceremony at Post headquarters.

"It will last for about 40 minutes," England said.

"We have a speaker, Capt. Ed Browder, he's a member of Mike Company, 3/5 Marines and a Vietnam combat veteran," England said.

After the Post's ceremony there will be a free luncheon with hamburgers, chips and beverages served, England said.

The general public is invited and encouraged to attend all of the Memorial Day events, he said.
