Free amusement rides, food planned for Aug. 9

It is gift bestowed upon area children ages 12 and younger, a festival of fun where everything is free, including the rides and food.

It is the Pickerington Senior Center's 3rd Annual Kid's Party, scheduled for Aug. 9 from noon to 5 p.m.

The family-friendly event will be held on the grounds of the Senior Center,150 Hereford Drive in Pickerington.

Various carnival rides, cotton candy, hot dogs, drinks, games and snow cones are on the agenda.

Organizers say there is likely nothing better for a kid in August than a chance to unwind on the cusp of an early start to the school year, which commences four days later.

"They can ride as much as they want to," said Don Fulks of the Pickerington Senior Center.

"We've never had a problem where there has been a line to the extent nobody could get on a ride," Fulks said.

Attractions also include a bounce house and slide as well as a miniature merry-go-round, he said.

Fulks said the Kid's Party was conceived out of desire to build some goodwill in a community that has demonstrated unwavering support for the Pickerington Senior Center.

"Our charter says we are to give back to the community," Fulks said.

"A few years ago we were very hard up. 'Destitute' is a better word," he said.

A successful 0.2-mill operating levy campaign in 2012 changed that, Fulks said.

"Since the levy passed we've had some money to spend on the community," he said.

"I thought of the kid's party program and it was approved. We've been doing it now for three straight years."

Fulks said families on a budget appreciate the opportunity for their children to spend a day of fun without having to worry about reining things in.

"We don't set a limit on the rides," he said.

"There is no charge for everything, including the hot dogs and the snow cones."

Last year the festival hosted an estimated 350 children, a substantial increase over the first year's attendance of about 200, Fulks said.

"We've gotten a lot of good feedback from the community about the event. This is one way we like to give back," he said.

Those who would like to attend need only show up, there is no registration. Participants in all activities are required to be 12 and younger.
