Three Pickerington doubles teams advanced from Division I sectional girls tennis tournaments last week to the district tournament Friday, Oct. 12, and Saturday, Oct. 13, at Hilliard Davidson.
At Pickerington High School Central, the Tigers' team of junior Nithya Raya and sophomore Kyah Thomas went 3-1 and finished second, defeating Dublin Coffman's Crissi Tzagournis and Annie Yang 6-1, 6-2 in a semifinal and losing 6-2, 6-3 to Watterson's Lauren Ghidotti and Katie Shepard 6-2, 6-3 in the final. Ghidotti and Shepard had defeated Central's other doubles team of junior Peyton Klein and sophomore Madi Schott 6-1, 6-0 in a semifinal.
Klein and Schott lost their third-place match 6-1, 6-1 to Tzagournis and Yang.
At Reynoldsburg, North's doubles team of seniors Melody Liu and Kelsey Weinstein went 3-2 and finished fourth. They lost 6-0, 6-0 to New Albany's Cristina DiLorenzo and Francesca DiLorenzo in a semifinal then lost 6-2, 6-4 to Olentangy's Megan Brdicka and Brianna Brdicka in the third-place match.
The top four finishers in singles and doubles advanced to district. From there, the top four finishers in singles and doubles will qualify to the state tournament Oct. 19 at Ohio State and Oct. 20 at Davidson.
Otherwise, the Tigers' three singles players -- junior Audrey Covert, senior Allyna Fischbach and sophomore Nikkia Thompson -- each lost their first-round matches.
The Panthers' doubles team of sophomore Rachel Brady and junior Rachel Sorensen went 1-1, as did sophomores Shaili Kothari, Emily Robinson and Noelle Wilson in singles.
In regular-season matches, Central finished 14-4 overall after a 4-1 loss to Upper Arlington on Oct. 3.
North fell to 9-7 with two losses last week, 3-2 to Upper Arlington B on Oct. 1 and 5-0 to New Albany on Oct. 2. The Panthers were scheduled to finish their regular season Oct. 9 at home against Dublin Scioto.
