North boys bound for district

Nine members of the Pickerington High School North boys swimming team qualified for the Division I district meet in five events, and all three relays advanced as the Panthers finished fourth (124 points) in a 12-team sectional Feb. 9 behind champion and host Upper Arlington (351).

The 200-yard medley relay (1 minute, 42.47 seconds) placed second, as did junior Andrew Martin in the 100 backstroke (53.35). Martin earned the second seed for the district meet and will be third in the 100 butterfly (52.67), an event in which he was second at sectional.

The district meet is Saturday, Feb. 16, at Ohio State.

Senior Sara Sams' second-place finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.81) led North's girls to 104 points and fifth-place behind champion UA (463).

Central senior Maddie Martin, an Auburn University signee and three-time defending state champion in the 100 fly, was second (59.2) in that event at sectional and third in the 100 free (53.74) to earn the third seed at district in both events. Central's girls scored 89 points and placed seventh at sectional.

Senior Zak Duncan's fourth-place performance in the 100 free (50.07) led the Tigers boys to 56 points and eighth place. His 10th seed in that event at district is the highest seed for Central's boys.

The winner of each sectional event qualified for district. In addition, 27 at-large district berths were awarded in each event based on times from the Central, East and Southeast sectional sites.

The top two placers in each swimming event at district automatically advance to the state meet Feb. 21-23 at Branin Natatorium in Canton.

In addition, 16 at-large state berths will be awarded for each swimming event based on times statewide. The top three boys divers and top four girls divers at district advance to state.
