Tigers, Panthers ousted from district tournament
The Pickerington High School Central and North girls volleyball teams' seasons both came to an end last week.
North, which was seeded 17th in the Division I district tournament, lost at 11th-seeded Olentangy Liberty 25-23, 25-16, 25-22 in a second-round match Oct. 16. The Panthers, who finished 14-10 overall and 10-4 in the OCC-Ohio Division, advanced by sweeping 30th-seeded and visiting Independence 25-3, 25-14, 25-18 on Oct. 14.
Central, which was the 34th seed, pulled off a road victory in the first round Oct. 14, defeating 29th-seeded Briggs 25-12, 25-17, 25-7 before losing at top-seeded DeSales 25-8, 25-11, 25-9 on Oct. 16. The Tigers finished 6-16 overall and were 3-11 in the OCC-Ohio.
Higher-seeded teams played host to matches in the first two rounds.
North finished third in the OCC-Ohio, behind Grove City (14-0) and Lancaster (12-2) and ahead of Gahanna (8-6), Newark (6-8), Central, Groveport (2-12) and Reynoldsburg (1-13).
The Panthers lose three seniors in defensive specialists Olivia Goodin and Lauren Martini and middle hitter/outside hitter Jessie Wachtman, who missed North's last several matches after sustaining a torn meniscus. Wachtman has committed to Morehead State.
Central is expected to return its entire team other than senior middle hitter Adelia Manley.
