The Pickerington High School North girls basketball team didn’t earn a banner by defeating Westerville North 50-47 in a Division I district semifinal Feb. 27 at Jonathan Alder, but it did make history for its coach.

The Panthers’ victory was the 700th in coach Dave Butcher’s career. He is now 700-98 in 31 seasons at Pickerington (1983-2003) and Pickerington North (2003-present).

Butcher became the state’s all-time winningest girls coach last year.

He is two wins ahead of Beavercreek’s Ed Zink, who is 698-214. Beavercreek’s season ended Feb. 18 with a 57-53 loss to Lebanon in a Division I Southwest District tournament second-round game.

North will try for its first district championship since 2011 when it plays fourth-seeded Northland in a district final at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 1, at Ohio Dominican.
