After several weeks of waiting, Johnathan Hedgepeth officially is the girls basketball coach at Pickerington High School Central.
The Pickerington Local Schools Board of Education approved his hiring during its meeting June 9.
Hedgepeth coached the Tigers on an interim basis last season, guiding them to a 17-8 overall record and a 9-5 mark in the OCC-Ohio Division. Central advanced to a Division I district semifinal before losing to Olentangy 57-51.
Hedgepeth took over for James Stutzman, who coached Central in the 2012-13 season before leaving to become athletics director at New Lexington, and was considered an interim coach because he was hired in September. Given the timing of Stutzman's resignation, the school district did not have time to conduct a full coaching search.
Central assistant athletics supervisor Peg Miller had hoped Hedgepeth would be hired full-time in late April.
But according to Miller, the hiring was pushed back in order for Hedgepeth to obtain an updated Pupil Activity Validation certificate, which is required by the Ohio Department of Education for those who supervise, direct or coach student-activity programs.
