The Pickerington Post 283 American Legion baseball team led 5-0 before starting pitcher Tyler Magley allowed his first baserunner during the first round of the eight-team, double-elimination state tournament July 30 at Beavers Field in Lancaster.
Pickerington went on to beat Beverly/Lowell Post 389/750 5-1 and plays Troy Post 43 on July 31.
Magley went 7 1/3 innings before giving way to Kyle Gannon. The duo limited Beverly/Lowell to five hits.
“Magley had a great start and persevered in a game where he didn’t have his best stuff,” coach Chris Weber said. “We played great defense and we had seven guys get at least one hit. It was exactly what we needed to do.”
Steven Asbury, Chris Brake and Doug Connor had two hits apiece, with one of Connor’s being a double. Asbury and Connor both drove in a run. Jordan Grubb hit a solo home run and Jacob Newton supplied a suicide squeeze.
