Courtney Martin keeps the third-place medal that she and Janee Walls won last year at second doubles in the OCC-Ohio Division tournament on top of a trophy in her bedroom.

It is a constant reminder of what the two can do when they work together and it serves as an inspiration to aim higher when the Reynoldsburg High School girls tennis team competes in the OCC-Ohio tournament at Pickerington North on Saturday.

"We're aiming for the gold medal this year," Martin said. "We really want to get first in the OCC this year."

"You can't give up anything at the OCC," Walls said. "It's a matter of keeping it together and keeping cool and constantly trying really hard to win."

Walls and Martin were able to close out a 3-2 win over Gahanna with a 6-7, 7-5, 6-2 victory over Meghan McGuff and Kathryn Emoff on Sept. 16. Macey Abrams defeated Molly Igdaloff 6-3, 6-4 at first singles and Casey Buccilla defeated Jessica Pawlarczyk 6-1, 6-0 at second singles, but the remaining three courts went to three sets.

"We needed that win," coach Les Somogyi said. "Casey played one of the most brilliant matches of her high school. Jessica has a very unorthodox style. She hits a lot of moonballs, but Casey did her homework and was really ready to play her. I was really proud of all my girls."

Somogyi compared Walls and Martin to graduates Paige Martin and Lauren Tellings, who lost to Sylvania Northview's Nikki Dzubay and Jane Pilewski 6-1, 6-3 in the first round of the Division I state tournament in 2004.

"Janee and Courtney click together like a Swiss watch," Somogyi said. "It's like they can read each other's mind. When we paired the two of them together, it made the whole team deeper than we were before. You can always count on them to win at first doubles."

At the beginning of the season, Somogyi experimented with his lineup by splitting Walls and Martin. Walls and Jamie Gardner were 4-1 at second doubles and Martin and McKenzie Spangler were 4-1 at first doubles.

Walls and Martin have been 13-1 overall since Somogyi paired them together this season at first doubles.

"I was really happy I got a chance to play (with Gardner). I tried my hardest whoever I was with," Walls said. "Courtney and I were able to pick things up where we left off last year. We have a lot of good teamwork and communication with each other."

"We didn't have to readjust," Martin said. "The chemistry is just there. Janee is very athletic and she's able to run back and get lobs or get to the net. She's an aggressive player. I am really good with serve, volleys and back hands for the most part. Whenever there's a rally, either one of us can put a shot away to end it."

Somogyi said the combination of Walls' speed and Martin's grit have helped them start so strongly but it will be tested at the league tournament. After being paired together two matches into league play, the two have built a 4-0 record.

"I've never had a player who can go from baseline to baseline like Walls," he said. "She can run down lobs and return them. Courtney's one of the most determined players out there. Putting those two ingredients together helps them win. It's a great combination Janee helps Courtney become a better player and Courtney helps Janee's performance."
