Organizers of Reynoldsburg's annual Tomato Festival have begun planning for the August event and need volunteers.

Mary Hudson, president of Reynoldsburg Tomato Festivals Inc., said the first planning meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, in the city council chambers. Other planning meetings will be held on the fourth Thursday of every month up until the festival.

She said anyone interested in volunteering is invited to come to the meetings.

"Some of the committees, like the entertainment committee, need to begin planning now so we can line up who will perform at the festival this year," Hudson said.

"In the past, we've had as many 30 show up at the meetings, but we want the public to know that they are welcome and we always need more people because we usually end up using about 150 volunteers," she said.

Other important committees that need to be formed include the games committee, grounds committee and sponsorship and publicity committees, Hudson said.

The Feb. 24 meeting will recap last year's festival and organize committees and elect board members for this year's event.

Hudson said this year's Tomato Festival will be held Aug. 19-20 and in Huber Park. She said the goal this year is to bring in more vendors and activities. Those interested in volunteering can attend the planning meetings or contact Hudson at (614) 866-4888 or via email at
