Back to school

Classes start Aug. 19 and 20 in Reynoldsburg

By ThisWeek Community News  •

Summer vacation ends earlier for Reynoldsburg students this year, as all grades head back to class Aug. 19 or 20, a week earlier than last year's start date of Aug. 27.

The school year will end earlier also, before Memorial Day on May 29.

Raider Check-ins for two of the high school academies took place last week, with students picking up their schedules, finding lockers and meeting teachers. BELL Early College Academy and HS(2) Academy had Raider Check-in Aug. 6.

Encore and eSTEM Academies participated in Raider Check-in Aug. 13 and 14.

All high school students begin the school year Aug. 19, but staggered starts are planned at the elementary, middle school and junior high levels, said Tricia Moore, director of partnerships and shared services.

"School principals use staggered starts to allow students and teachers to get to know each other quickly," Moore said.

The staggered starts also help students adjust to a new school building, she said.

Elementary students whose last names begin with letters A-L start class Aug. 19, then stay home Aug. 20. Those with last names beginning with letters M-Z start school Aug. 20, then all students attend Aug. 21.

Waggoner Road and Hannah Ashton middle schools follow the same kind of staggered start as the elementary schools.

At Baldwin Road Junior High, fifth- and sixth-graders start school Aug. 19, then stay home on Aug. 20 when seventh- and eighth-graders start classes.

At Waggoner Road Junior High, sixth- and eighth-graders start Aug. 19, then stay home Aug. 20 while grades five and seven begin school.

School hours changed this year also, with elementary schools starting and ending the day about 10 minutes earlier, from 8:05 a.m. to 2:35 p.m.

The biggest changes are at Waggoner Road Middle School and Waggoner Road Junior High, where classes for both begin at 9:15 a.m. and end at 3:45 p.m. Last year's start time was 7:35 a.m., with the school day ending at 2:05 p.m.

Hannah Ashton Middle School and the high school's Summit Road campus academies start earlier, at 7:25 a.m. instead of 8:15 a.m. and end at 1:55 p.m. instead of 2:45 p.m.

Classes at Baldwin Junior High and the high school's Livingston Avenue campus academies start school at 8:55 a.m. instead of 7:35 a.m. and end at 3:25 p.m. instead of 2:05 p.m.

Superintendent Steve Dackin said the reason for the bell schedule changes was to align with Columbus State Community College hours at the Livingston campus, which will maximize opportunities for students to take college classes.

He said there was also a need to change bus schedules so the district could transport students to Herbert Mills Elementary, because it became a second elementary school of choice this year.
