Two Reynoldsburg military service organizations have events planned in observance of Veterans Day Monday, Nov. 11.
Reynoldsburg VFW Post 9473 will have a short service at noon Nov. 11 to mark the day at the VFW post, 1420 S. Waggoner Road. The Post Canteen will provide lunch for its veteran members.
Service Officer Mike Moehl said the post's color guard will post colors at 5 p.m. the same day at the Golden Corral, 4750 E. Main St. in Whitehall.
Reynoldsburg American Legion Post 798 has scheduled its annual poppy sale and collection of canned and non-perishable food for the Reynoldsburg Helping Hands food pantry from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 11 on the south side of the Reynoldsburg Kroger/Aaron's parking lot, 6962 E. Main St.
Post Commander Timothy Dunn said donations will be accepted for poppy flowers, with all proceeds going to the needs of veterans and deployed military personnel and their families.
"The money turns right back around and goes into the Reynoldsburg community," he said. "We help veterans and with designated needs of the community, including helping with toys for children during the fire department drive and sending young people to Boys State."
Canned goods and non-perishable foods are desperately needed by the Reynoldsburg Helping Hands Food Pantry, said director Janet Munjas.
"We need peanut butter and jelly, tuna fish, spaghetti and spaghetti sauce, chili and soups of any kind, also cereal, and will accept all non-perishable foods -- but no food with expired dates," she said.
Munjas said the food pantry also accepts food donations from 9:30 a.m. to noon on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at Helping Hands, 7356 E. Main St.
She said the food pantry is also "desperately looking for a place to move."
"In our current location, we have no running water or bathroom, which is why we have to stay open very limited hours," she said.
Munjas said the food pantry serves only the residents of the Reynoldsburg school district. It first opened in 1958. Those who need help or who want to donate food or money should call the pantry at 614-868-9394.
"We can't pay a lot of rent for a place, but we are pretty much desperate to get out of that location, so if anyone has any suggestions for us, we are open to suggestions on where to move," she said.
Veterans will be able to get a free meal at some local restaurants on Veterans Day.
Max and Erma's at 3050 E. Broad St., will offer a free special combo meal all day Nov. 11 to any military veteran. The Golden Corral also is serving a free meal to veterans from 4 to 6 p.m. Nov. 11. Panera Bread restaurants are offering free meals to veterans and military personnel wearing a uniform or who can show a military ID.
