Recount gives school board race to Swope

Reynoldsburg Board of Education President Andrew Swope will retain his seat on the board after a recount Dec. 5 by the Franklin County Board of Elections.

Initial tallies on Nov. 5 indicated that only three votes separated Swope and incumbent Ryan Brzezinski. That was close enough to qualify for an automatic recount because the votes for the candidates were separated by less than one-half of 1 percent.

Elections board Public Information Officer Ben Piscitelli said the recount showed Swope defeated Brzezinski by 14 votes. He said the totals included votes cast in precincts in Licking County.

According to the recount, Swope received 2,647 votes or 24.76 percent, edging out Brzezinski, who received 2,633 votes or 24.63 percent.

Candidate Joe Begeny received the most votes in the race, with 2,717 votes, or 25.42 percent; Elaine Tornero was next with 2,692 votes or 25.18 percent.

Piscitelli said the board of elections will meet Dec. 9 to certify the recount.
