Hartley High School freshman Rachael Morales competed in the Division II state tennis tournament that completed last Saturday in Plain City. She finished third in singles.

Morales opened with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Lydia Colvin of Pepper Pike Orange last Friday, then defeated Emily Mazzola of Chagrin Falls 6-2, 6-3 in the second round.

Last Saturday Morales lost her first match of the season, 7-5, 1-6, 6-2 in a semifinal to Courtney Earnest of Lexington. In the third-place match, Morales beat Kelsey Matthews of Cincinnati Indian Hill 6-3, 6-3.

•The season ended for the girls soccer team on Oct. 20 when the Hawks lost to New Albany 1-0 in the first round of the Division I district tournament.

Amanda Setser had seven saves.

"It was just two even teams battling it out," Hartley coach Keith Scarlett said. "It was a good game. They scored about nine minutes in and it went back and forth the rest of the way. I figured it was going to be a close game."

Hartley finished 10-5-2 overall and fifth at 1-3-1 in the CCL behind Watterson (5-0), DeSales (4-1-0), Ready (2-2-1) and Worthington Christian (1-2-2) and ahead of Columbus School for Girls (0-5).

"If anybody would've told me that we would've done this well with what we lost from last year, and having the youth we had to rely on, as well as the new dynamic of being in Division I, then I would've taken it," Scarlett said. "Anytime you graduate 11 seniors and only have four seniors back, and only one of those players has more than one year of varsity experience, you have to be pleased with the results we had."

The Hawks will lose seniors Jillian Knox (defender), Sara Marchionda (defender), Jenn Moore (defender) and Sarah Endress (midfielder).

Top players expected to return include Kelsi Bobbitt (forward), Tricia Duffy (midfielder), Molly Mackessy (forward), Mallory Rhoads (forward), Amanda Setser (goalkeeper) and Jessica Skelly (midfielder/defender).

Bobbitt led the team in goals (9), assists (12) and points (30), Mackessy and Rhoads tied for second in goals (5) and points (13) and Skelly had four goals, three assists and 11 points.

"We'll be that much older and stronger on the offensive end next year," Scarlett said. "The girls that return all contributed in major ways and we relied on them this year. A lot of success was on their shoulders as the end of the year came."

Hartley's Rachael Morales hits a return to Lydia Colvin of Pepper Pike Orange during the Division II state tournament last Friday. Morales won the first-round match and went on to finish third last Saturday in Plain City.
