A Reynoldsburg High School wrestler advanced to the Division I state tournament for the eighth consecutive season last year, when 2010 graduate Jordan Marrero qualified as a heavyweight.

With four athletes expected to compete at district on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 25-26, at Hilliard Darby, the Raiders hope to add to that streak.

The top four placers in each weight class will qualify for state March 3-5 at Ohio State.

"Years ago, we were worried about having guys score bonus points so we could try to win a district championship," said coach Jared Ball, whose squad won district titles from 2006 through 2008 but tied Grove City and Thomas Worthington for 21st (28) behind champion Marysville (188.5) a year ago.

"But the $500 pay-to-participate fee really hurt our numbers last year, and we're still dealing with a $240 fee this year, so we've had to adjust some of our goals," Ball said. "We've had a nice run of getting guys to the state tournament, and we'd like to see that continue. The kids have all worked hard and it would be meaningful to see them continue to be successful in that way."

The Raiders scored 93 points to place eighth behind champion Lancaster (180) in the 13-team sectional at Westland on Feb. 19.

Four Reynoldsburg wrestlers placed in the top four of their weight classes to qualify for district.

Greg Chang went 3-1 to place second at 112 pounds. He was pinned by Westerville North's Joe Herrera in 1 minute, 34 seconds in the final.

Jordan Reed (189) and Alexander Straughter (103) each went 3-1 to finish third, and William Boykin went 3-2 to place fourth.

Nick Johnston (152) and Brad Syfers (140) both will serve as district alternates by going 3-2 and placing fifth.

"I was hoping we would get a few more out, but I'm pleased with the six who placed, because they all wrestled real well," Ball said. "Xander and Greg have been mainstays for us all year, and Jordan has had a good year, too. William has finished sixth the previous two years, so it was nice to see him get over the hump."

Straughter, the Raiders' only returning district qualifier, went 0-2 at district last year.

But Reed said the four Raiders are prepared for district-level competition after training with former Reynoldsburg state qualifiers and brothers Jeremy, Matt and Ryan Cook during multiple practices this season.

"I believe all four of us have a chance to make it to state if we wrestle our best at district," Reed said. "The Cooks came back to drill with us, and they pounded on us, which made us better. We thrived off learning from that experience and it made us tougher, both mentally and physically. After drilling with those guys, we should be ready to wrestle the tough competition we'll see at district."
