Reynoldsburg tries to focus on level of play
Life is good for the Reynoldsburg High School girls basketball team.
The Raiders won the OCC-Ohio Division title for the second season in a row, were ranked first in the Division I state poll last week, are the top seed in the district tournament and were undefeated before playing Franklin Heights in a second-round game on Feb. 22.
The Raiders know they can’t afford to become complacent.
“We have to always keep our cool and stay poised,” junior post player Destini Cooper said. “If we stay cool and don’t get too excited, we can focus on our game. We have to stay focused on our game and not get caught in the hype, just keep our heads in the game.”
Reynoldsburg improved to 21-0 with a 90-32 win over Groveport in the first round of the district tournament Feb. 16 at Olentangy Orange.
The Raiders overwhelmed Groveport, as they led 33-0 after the first quarter and extended their lead to 47-0 before taking a 51-11 lead into halftime.
Senior guard Adesuwa Aideyman had a career-high 22 points and sophomore post player Alyssa Rice scored 20. The other three starters — Cooper, junior guard Shiloh Murphy and senior guard Aliyah Zantt — combined for 26 points.
Reynoldsburg outscored Groveport 266-90 in three meetings this season, including their two OCC-Ohio contests. The Raiders beat the Cruisers 76-32 on Jan. 3 and 100-26 on Feb. 7.
Groveport finished 1-20.
“It’s really important to keep playing to our level and not to the level of our opponent,” Cooper said. “We have to always play our game because when we play the better teams, that lower level of play won’t be good enough.”
“We just have to keep our focus on the little things, play our game every time, keep up our intensity, work hard and keep our conditioning up,” Rice said. “In practice, we’ll run a lot, play fast and go hard at each other.”
Franklin Heights was 1-18 before facing the Raiders.
The second-round winner plays ninth-seeded Watterson or Hilliard Darby in a district semifinal at 8 p.m. March 1 at Orange. If Reynoldsburg advances to a district final at 7 p.m. March 3 at Orange, it would play seventh-seeded Olentangy, Delaware, Hilliard Bradley or Lancaster.
The Raiders, who have not played Watterson or Darby this season, are seeking their third consecutive district championship.
“We have a very good core, good leadership and we want to peak at the right time,” coach Jack Purtell said. “We’re fresh. Our schedule has been spread out and we don’t seem as tired as we’ve been at this point in past years.”
Through 21 games, Cooper was averaging 10 points and 7.0 rebounds and Rice was averaging 12 points and 7.3 rebounds. Zantt was averaging 11.8 points and Murphy was averaging 6.3 points and 3.7 rebounds.
Purtell is looking forward to the return of junior point guard Yamonie Jenkins, who was expected to play against Franklin Heights after sitting out two games with a concussion. She was replaced in the starting lineup by Aideyman.
Jenkins (6.0 points, 6.3 assists and 4.3 steals) was injured during practice Feb. 8.
“We get Monie back in our rotation and that will be good,” Purtell said. “She will be rested, too.”
