Boys tennis squad out to early success

By

The Reynoldsburg High School boys tennis team was expecting to finally be tested earlier this week.

After winning their first three matches by 5-0 scores, the Raiders beat Worthington Christian 4-1 on April 11 and were 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the OCC-Ohio Division before facing Pickerington Central on April 15.

Last season, Reynoldsburg finished third in the league at 5-2 (57) and Central was fourth at 4-3 (36).

On Thursday, April 17, the Raiders play at Gahanna, which finished second (6-1, 61) in the league behind Pickerington North (77, 7-0) a year ago.

Reynoldsburg plays Pickerington North on Tuesday, April 22, at home.

Senior Cameron Raglin was 2-0 at first singles and senior Yosef Maher was 2-0 at second singles through three matches.

The Raiders opened by beating Fisher Catholic 5-0 on April 2 and followed with 5-0 league wins over Grove City on April 8 and Newark on April 10.

Track teams set for Dublin Classic

The boys and girls track and field teams will compete Saturday, April 19, in the Dublin Classic at Dublin Coffman.

On April 12, the boys team finished 11th (27) in the 16-team Stingel Invitational at Pickerington North behind the champion and host Panthers (114). The girls were 12th (10) of 15 teams behind champion Gahanna (134).

Senior Corey Beal and junior Ashton Dulin have been among the boys team's standouts.

In the Wildcat Premier on April 5 at Hilliard Davidson, Beal threw 49 feet, 1 inch in the shot put -- the meet's best throw. He combined with sophomore Mark Gooden (37-1 1/2) and senior Christian Hill (34-5 1/2) to score two points in the shot-put relay.

Dulin won the 300-meter hurdles (40.57 seconds) in the Wildcat Premier.

The girls team has been led by junior distance runner Leah Wallace and a sprint corps that includes senior Nicole Thatcher, sophomores Brianna Barber, Monique Bolton, Finesse Jones, Cymone Rodgers and Kuziah Smith and freshman Tylar Mixon.

In the Wildcat Premier, Mixon was sixth in the 100 (13.52) and Wallace took fifth in the 1,600 (5:32.38). The 1,600 relay of Bolton, Mixon, Thatcher and Wallace was fourth (4:17.49).

Softball team preps for Newark

Among the softball team's biggest goals this season was being more competitive against OCC-Ohio opponents.

The Raiders swept Westland 11-1 and 16-9 in a doubleheader April 9 and were 2-6 overall and 0-2 in the league before playing Lancaster on April 16. Their game April 14 against Pickerington North was postponed.

Reynoldsburg lost a league game to Gahanna 10-0 on April 11.

The Raiders return to OCC-Ohio play Monday, April 21, at Newark, which was 0-4 overall and 0-2 in the league before playing non-league Olentangy on April 15 and league-foe Pickerington Central on April 16.

In a 13-2 league loss to Grove City on April 10, junior Kayla Armond hit a two-run home run.
