The Worthington Kilbourne High School wrestling team is sending five wrestlers to the Division I district tournament Saturday at Hilliard Darby.

"I'm pleased that we qualified five to the district, but to be honest I expected a bit more," first-year coach Ed Chism said. "I thought for sure we would be taking at least eight. I'm an optimist, that's the bottom line."

Competing at district are Nico Shaut (103), David Hutchinson (125), Andrew Taylor (130), Ryan Bott (171) and Jedidiah Bressman (215).

Shaut (25-10) opens the district tournament against Austin Marsico (33-5) of Pickerington North. Hutchinson (22-11) faces Olentangy Liberty's Jarrod Boone (30-7).

Taylor (32-5) wrestles Miamisburg's Caleb Perkins (13-8). Springboro's Tyler Ramsey (36-2) will be the first match for Bott (28-9).

Bressman (21-15) will open against Pickerington North's Alec Lamancusa (36-3).

Bressman, who won just five matches last season, is making his first appearance at district.

"I worked all summer to get to where I am today," Bressman said.

"It feels great (to be a district qualifier). I know there's going to be some tough competition at the district tournament, but I'm going to go out there and do my best."

All the Wolves face tough roads to the state tournament, but Chism said he is more concerned about the bigger picture. In trying to build the program, he said the wrestlers can take away a lot more from the district tournament than wins or losses.

"I just want them to compete," Chism said.

"I told them, it's not always about wins and losses, but the battle itself. I want them go in there with a sense of confidence, do the best that they can and try to get to that next level."

At the sectional tournament, Shaut, Hutchinson, Bott and Bressman all placed fourth. Taylor was a runner-up after being pinned in 2 minutes, 40 seconds by Jay Kunzi of Watkins Memorial.

Thomas will be represented by three wrestlers at district.

Making their first appearance are freshmen Jason Allen (130) and Andrew Shackelford (189). Joining them is Kosta Karageorge (heavyweight), who is looking to advance to the state tournament for a second consecutive season.

Allen (21-10) will open against Westland's Sean Clutter (35-2), Shackelford (14-11) opens with Nick Brown (35-5) of Gahanna and Karageorge starts his day against Mitch Cousins (24-12) of Gahanna.

At the sectional, Karageorge remained undefeated by winning all of his matches, including a win by forfeit over Reynoldsburg's Jordan Marrero in the championship match.

In his third place-match, Allen lost by a 6-1 decision to Anthony Michael of Olentangy Liberty.

Shackelford lost by a 2-1 decision to Ryan Sanders of St. Charles in his third-place match.
