The Thomas Worthington High School girls golf team knows what it will be up against when it competes in the Division I sectional tournament Tuesday at Foxfire Golf Club in Lockbourne.

With top-seeded Watterson, No. 6 Olentangy Liberty and No. 8 DeSales as the top teams at the site, the Cardinals aren't likely to finish among the top three to advance to the district tournament Oct. 12 at Bent Tree.

It also might be difficult for any of the Cardinals' individuals to qualify for district, although freshman Ally Lucas has had some encouraging 18-hole rounds this season.

The sectional is going to be viewed by Thomas as a stepping stone for future success.

After shooting 461 to finish eighth at the nine-team Mill Creek sectional last year, the Cardinals are looking for a middle-of-the-pack team finish this time.

Rounding out the 10-team field at Foxfire are Hilliard Darby, Lancaster, New Albany, Teays Valley, Watkins Memorial and Westerville South.

"The top four teams that went there (also including 10th-seeded New Albany) are some of the big schools, so I don't think that we're going to get out of the sectional," coach Sean Kaiser said. "But there are three or four schools that we can beat. It's going to be a learning experience for us."

The Cardinals went winless each of the past two seasons in the OCC-Ohio but finished sixth at 7-21 this fall ahead of Watkins Memorial (5-23) and Hilliard Darby (4-24) and behind champion Pickerington North (28-0).

On Sept. 20 at Glenross, Thomas used a score from junior Michaela Scholl, a 52, during a 194-198 loss to Lancaster.

Lucas' best round of 18 holes came when she shot 96 at Raymond Memorial on Sept. 15. Lindsay Lawell is a first-year player who has averaged 50 for nine holes.

The only seniors among the regulars are Mary Antry and Erin Tope.

"Ally Lucas has been a bright spot for us," Kaiser said. "Lindsay Lawell is a first-year player averaging about 50 or 51 all season, and she should be congratulated for that. It's exciting when you start to look at next year."

ĽKilbourne finished third in the OCC-Capital at 14-10 behind Dublin Coffman (24-0) and Marysville (20-4).

The Wolves were seeded 12th for the postseason and will compete at the Raymond Memorial sectional along with second-seeded Dublin Coffman, No. 4 Marysville and No. 7 Gahanna. Also competing at the site are Dublin Scioto, Hilliard Bradley, Olentangy Orange, Pickerington Central and Westerville North.

Kilbourne shot a 377 on Aug. 17 to finish third in the first round of the OCC-Capital tournament at Raymond Memorial.

"It's an uphill battle to get out, but we like that course," coach Brian Riegel said. "We got a pretty good draw playing at Raymond Memorial, which is where the girls wanted to go. Gahanna's been a team that's been a little erratic, so you never know."

The Wolves finished fourth (367) at the nine-team Mentel Memorial sectional last year.

Junior Natalie Irwin shot an 87 at the sectional last year to miss advancing to district by six strokes. She has carded 81 twice this season. At two of last year's sectionals, players who shot 88 advanced to district.

Freshman Leah Nourse has been another bright spot, and senior Elle Ruhl has been playing well lately, according to Riegel.

The other regulars have been seniors Sarah Chidester and Mara Hawkins and junior Nicole Waltermeyer.

"We ended up third in our division (of the OCC) and we've been playing some without my No. 3 player, Nicole Waltermeyer, who has had an inner ear issue," Riegel said. "She's been very disappointed to not be able to play, but hopefully she'll be able to play."
