Football Week 1 Recap

Bexley 53, Africentric 26

Lions blow past Nubians

The Bexley High School football team converted four second-quarter turnovers into 27 points on its way to a 53-26 win over visiting Africentric on Friday, Aug. 26, in the opener for both teams.

With the Lions holding a 6-0 lead and the Nubians offense at the Bexley 12-yard line, Lions senior defensive back Alec Robins intercepted quarterback Trevon Saunders and returned the ball 95 yards for a touchdown with 6 minutes, 25 seconds left in the first half.

"I think I was just at the right place at the right time," Robins said. "I knew we couldn't let them score. I'm just happy I came up with (the interception)."

On Africentric's first play from scrimmage after the interception, Lions linebacker Henry Warren scooped up a fumble and returned 15 yards for a touchdown.

Bexley linebacker Luke Groom then intercepted Saunders and returned the ball 27 yards to the Nubians' 1. Lions quarterback Jalen Robinette scored on a 1-yard run on the next play to put Bexley ahead 27-0.

On Africentric's next play from scrimmage, Saunders was intercepted by linebacker Andrew Lively, who returned the ball 9 yards to the Nubians' 5. Robinette scored three plays later to put Bexley up 34-0 with 3:36 left in the first half.

"Things just went our way in the second quarter," Bexley coach John Smith said. "That's the first time I've been in a game when my team created that many turnovers. That was one of those once-in-a-lifetime quarters that you have."

"You can't beat a little league team with six turnovers," Africentric coach Eugene Barnett said. "Not to take anything away from the Bexley kids, but we made their job easier."

The game did not start well for the Lions, as a holding penalty wiped out what would have been an 83-yard touchdown return by Bexley senior D.J. Jones on the opening kickoff.

Later in the first quarter, Robinette was stopped on fourth-and-2 from the Bexley 21. However, the Lions' defense, aided by three penalties by the Africentric offense, didn't allow the Nubians to score on the ensuing possession.

Jones rushed for 129 yards and touchdowns of 11, 21 and 8 yards.
