The Marion-Franklin High School football team prevented first-year Brookhaven coach Trevor White -- an assistant with the Red Devils a year ago -- from winning his debut as the host Red Devils held off the Bearcats 28-27 on Friday, Aug. 26.
Brookhaven scored on a 49-yard pass from quarterback Tajuan Green to Kevin Greenhow in the fourth quarter to pull within one point, but the Bearcats' attempt to take the lead on a two-point conversion failed when Green's pass was incomplete.
The Red Devils had taken the lead earlier in the fourth quarter on a 5-yard run by Andre Strider, who also had a 7-yard scoring run in the first quarter and finished with 38 yards.
Quarterback Corry Benson led Marion-Franklin with 70 yards rushing and was 7-for-12 passing for 11 yards with a 22-yard scoring completion to Darien Williams.
For the Bearcats, Green completed 10 of 24 passes for 159 yards and ran for a game-high 87 yards with scoring runs of 1 and 13 yards.
Brookhaven -- which trailed 22-21 at halftime -- finished with 303 yards of total offense while limiting the Red Devils to 243 yards. The Bearcats also held a 17-8 edge in first downs.
