Hayes students cheer on the Pacers during the football game against Buckeye Valley on Aug. 26.

Caleb Green rushed for 189 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries and threw a 30-yard touchdown pass out of the "Wildcat" formation as Buckeye Valley held off host Delaware 38-32 in double overtime Friday, Aug. 26.

It was only the Barons' second win in the past 10 meetings and their first since 2006.

"We finally got them," Green said as he ran off the field as the lights were turned off on the exiting overflow, standing-room-only crowd at Gauthier Field. "We finally got them."

Shawn Free caught an 8-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Kevan Green on a third-and-goal play in the second overtime for the decisive points.

The following Pacers' possession ended on downs. Delaware's Ethan Nicol landed just out of bounds on a diving catch on third-and-7 from the 17-yard line, and Josh Bender's fourth-down pass to Matt Bingaya sailed high to end the game.

"This was just a terrific high school football game," first-year Delaware coach Zebb Schroeder said. "Both teams made big plays and Buckeye Valley made a few more than us. They played well.

"We didn't execute well. We had a lot of penalties and we didn't tackle well, especially in the first half. We had guys in position, but (Caleb Green) was making us miss."

Free's 9-yard run with 5 minutes, 55 seconds remaining gave the visitors a 32-26 lead, but the Pacers' blocked the extra point.

Delaware then drove 79 yards in seven plays, as Taylor Adair scored on a 12-yard run with 1:47 left. Aly Smiley's potential go-ahead extra-point kick was blocked. Smiley, a girls soccer player, had made her first attempt after the Pacers were 1-for-3 on extra points in the first half.

Kevan Green was 13-of-23 passing for 121 yards for the Barons.

Adair ran for 110 yards and two touchdowns for the Pacers, who rotated Bender and Alex Rafeld at quarterback. Bingaya caught eight passes for 96 yards and two touchdowns.
