Canal Winchester High School quarterback Alex Fox became a dual threat in a season-opening 12-7 victory over visiting St. Charles on Friday, Aug. 26.
The senior completed 15 of 25 passes for 174 yards and a touchdown while also scoring the decisive touchdown on a 78-yard run to give coach Shawn Hinkle a victory in his debut.
"It was little more exciting than I would've wanted," said Hinkle, who also was celebrating his birthday. "But what pleased me the most is the fact that our kids did not quit. We kept coming back."
The Indians opened the scoring on a 7-yard pass from Fox to senior receiver Royce Calloway in the first quarter. After a failed two-point conversion attempt, the score was 6-0.
The teams swapped field position and St. Charles took a 7-6 lead early in the third quarter after the defense forced a three-and-out deep in Indians' territory.
With a short field, junior running back Sean Fitzmartin went 36 yards for the score and the extra point by John Colosimo gave the Cardinals the lead.
Midway through the fourth quarter, St. Charles was deep in Canal Winchester territory and looked to increase its lead. On first-and-goal on the 1, the Cardinals fumbled and the ball was recovered by Indians linebacker Lamont Martin.
It took only four plays for Fox to find a spot in the other end zone as he went 78 yards on a zone-read.
For St. Charles coach Jeff Pharion, the turnover was the obvious difference.
"Too many turnovers," he said after his team committed three for the game. "You know, when you turn the ball over on the 2-yard line, that just kills you. The momentum switches and they go 98 yards. That's football."
