Football Week 2 Recap

Hilliard Darby 24, Dublin Jerome 7

Panthers' defense dominates Celtics

The Hilliard Darby High School football team turned in a dominant defensive effort while beating visiting Dublin Jerome 24-7 on Friday, Sept. 2.

The Panthers, who improved to 2-0, limited Jerome to minus-5 yards while building a 10-0 halftime lead.

The Celtics, who dropped to 0-2, didn't gain a first down until the second half and finished with just 102 yards of offense.

"I'm proud of the way our defense played because (the Celtics) have some special athletes, including Cameron Wilson and Donovan Wilson, and our guys were aware of where they were at all times," Darby coach John Santagata said. "Our defensive line played really well and our linebackers and backs were free to make plays behind our line."

In his second start at quarterback, Darby junior Chase Longwell was 4-for-7 passing, including a 53-yard touchdown to Caleb Day to give Darby a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.

On the first play from scrimmage in the second half, Darby junior linebacker Cameron Kohl intercepted a pass from Logan Williams and returned it 39 yards for a touchdown to put Darby ahead 17-0.

"I was keying on (Cameron Wilson) most of the game because he's an athlete, and when I saw the ball in the air, I grabbed it and ran as fast as I could," Kohl said. "Our defensive line made things easy for us. Our defensive line had a lot of penetration and we were able to clean up everything Jerome did."

Joe Bano replaced Williams at quarterback after Kohl's interception and he had a 45-yard run to spark a seven-play, 85-yard drive that was capped by a 5-yard touchdown run by Donovan Wilson with 5 minutes, 56 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.

But Darby sophomore cornerback Devon Rogers intercepted a pass by Bano and returned it 32 yards for a touchdown to make it 24-7 with 2:36 left.

The Panthers committed five turnovers, but the Celtics didn't score after any of them.

"To win the turnover battle and lose by this much doesn't make a lot of sense," Jerome coach Mark Hundley said. "Our defense did a nice job of battling for 48 minutes, but our offense didn't do that."
