Football Week 2 Recap
Findlay 17, Reynoldsburg 16
Trojans score in final seconds to send Raiders to first loss
The Reynoldsburg High School football team came within eight seconds of posting its first 2-0 start since 2001.
Dylan Blunk caught a 3-yard touchdown pass from Paul Cosiano with 7.9 seconds left and Brandon Shanahan made the extra point as host Findlay defeated the Raiders 17-16 to move to 2-0 for the first time since 1994.
"Both teams made enough mistakes to lose. Unfortunately, somebody had to win and it wasn't us," Reynoldsburg coach Buddy White said. "We battled. They battled. That's the beauty of high school football. That's the beauty of the game."
The Raiders took a 16-10 lead with 1:03 left when the Trojans were called for a penalty in the end zone. Following the safety, many of the fans headed toward the exits.
On the ensuing free kick, Findlay's Avery Roberts made a perfect squib kick that took a high hop on the third bounce, and Aaron Doty grabbed it in stride and was pushed out of bounds at the 42.
Cosiano had been pressured by the Raiders all night, having two passes intercepted, including one in the end zone. On the final drive, the Trojans tried to use that to their advantage and hit three consecutive screen passes to Vance Settlemire for 21 yards and Jimmy Orwick for 11 and 23 yards. The final pass put the Trojans on the Raiders' 3 and set up the winning score.
Cosiano finished 19-for-27 passing for 289 yards.
Reynoldsburg was led by Kumar Collins, who rushed for 133 yards and a touchdown on 29 carries. His 4-yard run tied the score at 7 in the first quarter.
The Raiders' other score came on a 20-yard pass from Jordan Aekins to Mykel Bennett.
Aekins completed six of 14 passes for 103 yards, and Bennett had four receptions 62 yards.
