Football Week 3 Recap

'Short gun' offense gives Jaguars 3-0 start

The Westland High School football team couldn't handle a big dose of Hilliard Bradley's "short gun" offense.

Using the spread offense concept with the quarterback only two yards behind the center, the visiting Jaguars easily defeated the Cougars 64-0 on Friday, Sept. 9, to close the non-league portion of the schedule at 3-0. The Cougars have lost two in a row to fall to 1-2.

Blake Scipio led the Jaguars' attack by rushing for 150 yards and four touchdowns on 10 carries, all in the first half. Scipio scored on runs of 1, 29, 31 and 43 yards.

In three games, the Jaguars have outscored their three opponents 153-10, but coach Mike LoParo said it isn't just a credit to the offense.

"We are a defensive team," he said. "We always draft our defensive players first because we have to have them stout to be successful."

The Jaguars opened the scoring when Terell Stanford caught a 33-yard pass from Connor Driscoll for a 7-0 lead.

After Scipio's 1-yard scoring run, Reilly Butz returned a punt 60 yards to put the Jaguars up 21-0. Scipio's 29-yard scoring run closed the first quarter with the Jaguars leading 29-0.

In the second quarter, Standford (41 yards) and Scipio (31 and 43 yards) had rushing touchdowns to push the lead to 50-0 at the half.

Rushing touchdowns by Matt Bryant (35 yards) and Butz (21 yards) in the third quarter closed the scoring.

The schedule gets much more difficult for the Jaguars, who will open OCC-Capital Division play on Friday, Sept. 16, against New Albany.

The Eagles improved to 2-1 with a 27-24 victory over DeSales.

"I think that New Albany has been the top team if not one of the top three teams in our league for the last couple of years, and we know that the title will go through them," LoParo said.
