The Olentangy Orange High School football team scored 21 points in the first quarter en route to defeating host Westerville North 35-7 on Friday, Sept. 9.
Orange improved to 2-1 and North dropped to 0-3. The loss was the Warriors' 28th in a row.
The Pioneers scored on their first two plays from scrimmage to jump out to a 14-0 lead less than two minutes into the game.
Running back Brandon Schoen scored on the Pioneers' first offensive play on a 45-yard run. Then, after Orange recovered a North fumble, the Pioneers scored on the first play of the ensuing possession, as quarterback Kofi Hill connected with wide receiver Lucas Wolford on a 30-yard touchdown pass.
"Taking a big lead on a team always feels good because when you know you have the momentum, it can carry through for the rest of the game," Schoen said.
North scored on a 24-yard pass from quarterback B.J. Campfield to wide receiver Kevin Schaublin to cut its deficit to 14-7 in the first quarter, but before the quarter ended Schoen scored on a 1-yard run to increase the Pioneers' lead to 21-7.
However, Orange's offense sputtered for the majority of the final three quarters, especially the second half.
"We played two emotional games in Olentangy and (Olentangy) Liberty, so I knew our kids were going to be a little bit down," Orange coach Brian Cross said. "We were playing Westerville North, who has been going through a tough losing streak, and I don't think that our kids were as jacked up as they have been the last two weeks.
"We weren't very crisp tonight. We did some dumb things tonight, so those are things we're going to have to work on. We did not execute the way we want to execute, both offensively and defensively."
Wolford scored on a 25-yard run in the second quarter to make it 28-7. Orange closed the scoring with a 49-yard pass from Hill to tight end Taylor Hardy in the fourth quarter.
Schoen had 108 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries and had two interceptions on defense. Orange finished with 362 total yards, including 248 rushing yards.
North produced 317 total yards and had numerous long drives but struggled to take advantage of its scoring opportunities.
"We had a golden opportunity to cut the score from 21-7 to 21-14 and we had a holding penalty that cost us," North coach Mike Owens said. "We're young and we're still trying to learn the game and get better every week. We've got to stop the silly mistakes."
