Football Week 3 Recap

Westerville Central 28, Thomas Worthington 13

Warhawks beat Cardinals to post first 3-0 start

The Westerville Central High School football team improved to 3-0 for the first time in program history with a 28-13 win over Thomas Worthington on Friday, Sept. 9.

The Warhawks led 15-0 at the half and then held off a rally after the break by host Thomas, which fell to 1-2.

Senior running back Josh Gardy led the Warhawks, rushing for 121 yards on 24 carries.

Senior quarterback Cody Kondas completed eight of 21 passes for 170 yards and four touchdowns.

"It wasn't pretty," Central coach John Magistro said. "Cody didn't have his usual night, but he played one heck of a game on defense. He made up for it. When we needed it, we got tough. We gritted our teeth a little bit and did it."

Thomas was held to 19 yards in the first half, but used the strong play of sophomore quarterback Jalen Wells to rally in the second half. Wells completed nine of 18 passes for 165 yards and two touchdowns.

After Central's Blake Munn opened the scoring with a 22-yard field goal early in the second quarter, Kondas connected with Channing Doermann for a 32-yard touchdown pass with 2 minutes, 7 seconds left in the half.

Central added to its lead after a Thomas turnover, as Kondas hit Charlie Moushey for a 15-yard touchdown with 19 seconds left in the half.

The lead grew to 21-0 early in the second half when Kondas and Moushey hooked up for a 3-yard touchdown.

Thomas struck quickly on its next possession, however, when Wells connected with Nana Kyeremeh for a 77-yard touchdown.

The Cardinals then pulled to within 21-13 on their next possession, as Wells hit an open Brandon Miller for a 38-yard touchdown.

Thomas had the ball twice more with a chance to pull even, but the Central defense held.

The Warhawks sealed the win when Kondas connected with Doermann for a 59-yard touchdown with 2:22 left in the game.

"We made too many mistakes," Thomas coach Scott Gordon said. "You get to a point where you keep making some serious errors and you can't overcome that. We had a lot of errors in coverage. We had corners slipping and getting beat deep and not coming up and making tackles. They got a couple big ones on us and it's tough to overcome that."
