Football Week 4 Recap
Olentangy Orange 55, Mount Vernon 6
Schoen shines in Pioneers’ rout of Yellow Jackets
Brandon Schoen scored four touchdowns, including three in the first quarter, to lead the Olentangy Orange High School football team to a 55-6 victory over visiting Mount Vernon on Friday, Sept. 16, in the OCC-Capital Division opener for both teams.
Orange extended its winning streak to three games and improved to 3-1 overall, while Mount Vernon fell to 0-4.
Schoen, a 5-foot-11, 190-pound senior running back, returned the opening kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown and Bryan Schrader kicked the extra point, giving the Pioneers a 7-0 lead just 16 seconds into the game.
“That really sets the tone for the rest of the game,” Orange coach Brian Cross said. “It got us off to a great start and we continued to roll after that.”
“We talked in the locker room (before the game) about taking as many (kickoffs and punts) back today as we could and try to get off to a good start,” Schoen said. “But (the touchdown on the kickoff return) was all because of the blocking, to be honest.”
On Orange’s first possession, Schoen capped a 10-play, 96-yard drive with a 4-yard touchdown run to give the Pioneers a 13-0 lead. Among the key plays on the drive was a 39-yard run by wide receiver Lucas Wolford.
Then, after Orange forced the Yellow Jackets to punt from their 30 on the ensuing possession, Schoen returned the punt 62 yards for a touchdown with 3 minutes, 10 seconds left in the first quarter. The extra point by Mitchell Hopkins made it 20-0.
“I don’t know how well we blocked on (Schoen’s kickoff return),” Cross said. “It looked like Schoen just kind of took off with the ball and outran people, but I think on the punt return we had a great wall set up.”
On its next possession, Orange went ahead 27-0 on a 5-yard run by fullback Michael Forbes with 40 seconds left in the first quarter.
Mount Vernon cut its deficit to 27-6 when Leevi Stump returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown, but Orange scored two touchdowns in the second quarter -- a 4-yard run by Forbes and a 24-yard run by running back Larry Rode -- to extend its lead to 41-6 by halftime.
Schoen, who rushed for 82 yards on six carries, scored his fourth touchdown on a 31-yard run on the Pioneers’ first possession of the second half to make it 48-6. Orange closed the scoring with a 4-yard touchdown run by Scott Smith in the fourth quarter.
“This is a young football team from Mount Vernon,” Cross said. “Their coach (Anthony Naples) didn’t get the job until the summer, so they’re a little bit behind, but I thought our defense did play well.”
Orange’s defense forced two turnovers and stopped Mount Vernon twice on fourth down. The Pioneers also sacked quarterback Shawn Maxwell twice. Defensive back Coleman McCurry had one of the sacks and defensive backs Gianni Ventresca and Triston Richardson combined on the other.
Among the other contributors on offense for the Pioneers were quarterback Kofi Hill, who completed four of six passes for 44 yards and Wolford, who had 56 yards rushing on three carries. Rode had 45 yards rushing and a touchdown on four carries.
Stump led Mount Vernon’s offense with 59 yards on 12 carries. Maxwell completed six of 14 passes for 61 yards.
