Ohio State recruit Joshua Perry rushed for 199 yards and touchdowns of 61, 1 and 88 yards to lead the Olentangy High School football team to a 35-25 victory over host Dublin Scioto in the OCC-Cardinal Division opener for both teams on Friday, Sept. 16.
“We came out here with an intensity we haven’t seen in a couple of weeks,” said Perry, as the Braves improved to 2-2 overall while the Irish fell to 1-3. “The energy was there and the team morale was up tonight.”
“We weren’t going to be fancy, but I thought we went back to what we do best,” Olentangy coach Ed Terwilliger said. “And that’s get mean and play physical.”
Perry rushed for 87 yards and two touchdowns on his first five carries but had apparent touchdown runs of 36 and 25 yards wiped out by holding calls on the Braves’ fourth drive of the first half.
After the drive fizzled at the Irish 19, Perry still found a way to get Olentangy into the end zone when he pressured Irish quarterback Evan DeMars into an errant pass. Olentangy defensive back Griffin Binkley picked it off and returned it 21 yards for a touchdown to give Olentangy a 21-0 lead with 6 minutes, 3 seconds left in the first half.
“It’s something you have to deal with. It’s football,” Perry said. “You have to deal with adversity. When things don’t go your way, you have to come out and readjust.”
After Olentangy ran for 186 yards in the first half while limiting the Irish to minus-13 yards, DeMars helped his team get back on track after the break.
DeMars completed 19 of 30 passes for 202 yards and four touchdowns as Scioto tried to rally.
“That’s not what we’d planned to do, but they completely took away our running game,” Scioto coach Karl Johnson said. “We did a good job of taking what they were giving us.
“Our kids kept fighting through the full game, which is what we expect them to do. But you don’t want to spend the whole game chasing them. If you do, the odds aren’t in your favor.”
