Football Week 4 Recap

Marysville 25, Olentangy Liberty 22

Monarchs top Patriots on late touchdown

Quarterback Connor Devine’s 5-yard touchdown pass to Morgan Miller with 28 seconds remaining lifted the Marysville High School football team to a 25-22 win over visiting Olentangy Liberty on Friday, Sept. 16, in the OCC-Cardinal Division opener for both teams.

The Monarchs improved to 3-1, and the Patriots fell to 1-3.

“This is the first time we’ve been 1-0 in the league since I’ve been here,” fifth-year Marysville coach Jeff Gafford said. “We want to break through and we want to do things we haven’t done before and this is one of those things.”

Miller’s score capped an 11-play, 69-yard drive. Marysville’s Kyle Hites recovered the ensuing short kickoff to seal the win.

Liberty had taken a 22-18 lead on quarterback Joey Longhino’s 18-yard flanker screen to A.J. Motika with 3:42 remaining.

The Patriots utilized a no-huddle offense to take the lead in the first quarter.

Longhino hit Bryson Wray for a 9-yard touchdown to cap a nine-play, 81-yard drive on the game’s first possession. Matt Muntean added the two-point conversion on a fake extra-point attempt for an 8-0 lead.

Liberty took advantage of a blocked punt to add to its lead. Three plays later, Longhino connected with Motika for a 24-yard touchdown.

Marysville rallied in the second quarter to tie the game at 15.

Joseph Boyd scored on a 7-yard touchdown run and Hites caught Nick Mazza’s short kick on the ensuing kickoff to put Marysville in position to score again.

The Monarchs took advantage, as a closely defended Craig Runyan made a diving catch in the back corner of the end zone for a 15-yard touchdown from Connor Devine. Boyd added the two-point conversion to tie the game with 28 seconds left in the first half.

“We didn’t panic and we put together a drive, and then something happened on special teams and we went for two,” Gafford said.

Boyd finished with 109 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries.

Longhino completed 20 of 26 passes for 185 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. Motika caught four passes for 82 yards and two touchdowns.
