The Dublin Coffman High School football team scored six touchdowns in the first quarter and routed visiting Westland 76-0 on Friday, Sept. 23.
The Shamrocks gained 407 yards and scored on their first seven drives.
Junior quarterback James Walsh completed seven of nine passes for 170 yards with two touchdowns, a 45-yarder to junior Austen Rankin and a 48-yarder to junior Tony Woodford.
Junior Daniel Chang led the Coffman rushing attack with 69 yards and three touchdowns on 10 carries. Senior Mark Kendrick followed with 68 yards and two touchdowns on six carries, and Tyler Lisovich had 20 yards and a touchdown on four carries.
“Our first-team guys only got 25 snaps in the game,” Coffman coach Mark Crabtree said. “James did a couple good things in the passing game and Daniel Chang and Mark did a lot of good things the few times they got to touch the ball.”
Coffman’s defense was equally strong, forcing three turnovers and not allowing a first down until 1:49 to go in the second quarter.
Westland coach Steve White said his entire team didn’t give 100 percent effort.
“We had some kids that competed the entire time, but we need to make sure going forward that we get all 22 kids playing with more of a sense of urgency and making sure they play full go every second on the field,” he said.
Crabtree used the blowout as an opportunity to play his backups.
“I think that the big win gave us the opportunity to really get a lot of kids significant playing time that otherwise wouldn’t get it,” he said. “We got virtually every kid in the ballgame and that always helps out with team chemistry and unity and makes everyone feel like they contributed to the win.”
