The Whetstone High School football team scored on its first possession but it was all Brookhaven from that point as the host Bearcats won the City League-North Division game 48-12 on Friday, Sept. 30.
With a swarming defense and an offense that scored on every possession but the final one, the Bearcats improved to 4-2 overall and 3-0 in the division. The Braves fell to 0-6 and 0-3.
Tajuan Green completed three of four passes for 104 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 156 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries.
Green’s 12-yard run gave the Bearcats a 7-6 leads and he hit Clevis Towns on a 55-yard pass play for a 14-6 lead after the first quarter.
While Brookhaven coach Trevor White said several linemen, such as Trevor Meek stepped up defensively, it was certainly Green’s performance that sealed the deal.
“He stole the show,” White said.
He certainly did, rushing for a 95-yard touchdown and hitting Towns on a 47-yard scoring pass in the second period.
In between, Joshua Baker returned an interception 66 yards for a touchdown as Brookhaven led 34-6 at the half.
However, White still found room for improvement.
“We’re still making a few too many mistakes,” he said.
In the second half, Antonio Bell scored on a 2-yard run and Blake McEwen added a 51-yard scoring run.
White said there were aspects on both offense and defense that the Bearcats needed to improve upon.
“For us, every week is a playoff,” he said. “We’re just looking to get better every week, but it is nice to have a little momentum.”
