Hartley 56, Elyria Catholic 31

Hawks roll past visiting Panthers

The Hartley High School football team used a quick start on its way to beating Elyria Catholic 56-31 in non-league action Friday, Oct. 7.

The tempo was set from the second play as the Alonzo Saxton scored on a 77-yard run.

“We were defiantly flat,” said Elyria Catholic coach Mike Polevacik, whose team fell to 2-4. “They scored early and often, and it was like getting punched in the face.”

Hartley’s offensive line would prove powerful as it paved the way for a rushing attack that amassed 383 yards. JaWaun Woodley rushed for 142 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries, and Saxton finished with 119 yards on three attempts as the Hawks improved to 5-0. Hartley is ranked second in the Division IV state poll.

“I think when you give a team a 14-0 lead that quick into the game it certainly makes a team readjust,” Hartley coach Brad Burchfield said.

Woodley’s first touchdown, a 4-yard run with 9 minutes, 29 seconds left in the first quarter, gave the host Hawks a two-touchdown lead.

Elyria Catholic tried to get its offense in motion with deep throws downfield but could only muster a 22-yard field goal by Vincent Faraji.

Woodley’s second 4-yard scoring run was followed by a 4-yard run by Marcellus Calhoun to push the lead to 28-3.

Panthers quarterback Jeremy Holley, who finished 20 of 32 for 217 yards, threw the first of his four touchdown passes, hitting Matt Morgan from 3 yards to close the deficit to 28-10 with 5:20 left. Holley also had two passes intercepted.

However, that was plenty of time for the Hawks to score again as Calhoun scored from 3 yards to push the advantage back to 25 at 35-10.

“This game could of gotten out of hand, if we just rolled over and died, but I think the positive is we did come back and score points,” Polevacik said.

Hartley opened the second-half scoring with a 24-yard pass from Jared Brandewie to Jacob Matuska as the lead grew to 42-10.

Holley hit Morgan from 42 yards and Jordan Alpater from 10 yards to cut the margin to 42-24.
