Cody Kondas threw three touchdown passes and rushed for another to help the Westerville Central High School football team beat host Dublin Scioto 31-0 on Friday, Oct. 7, to remain in the hunt for an OCC-Cardinal Division championship.
The victory was the first for the Warhawks against the Irish, who had won the last five meetings.
Central improved to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the OCC-Cardinal, while Scioto dropped to 2-5 and 1-3.
Westerville South and Olentangy also are 3-1 in the OCC-Cardinal.
“These seniors had never beaten Dublin Scioto, so this was a big win for them,” Central coach John Magistro said. “They always have a great program and a lot of athletes. I know they have a young squad, but they’re always a tough team.”
Kondas completed 10 of 13 passes for 263 yards and an interception.
Wide receiver Max Shawver caught two of Kondas’ touchdown passes, including a 72-yard score that gave the Warhawks a 24-0 lead with 5 minutes, 19 seconds left in the third quarter.
Kondas connected with Channing Doermann for a 59-yard touchdown that put Central ahead 10-0 with 5:21 left in the first quarter.
Scioto, which entered the game averaging 31 points, was held to 210 total yards, including 81 rushing.
The Irish lost a fumble at the Central 4-yard line with 8:45 to play in the third quarter. Three of their drives ended with a turnover.
“They played a fantastic football game and we didn’t,” Scioto coach Karl Johnson said. “Their defense took away almost everything we wanted to do. We got behind and we wanted to get our running game going, but we didn’t.”
