Braves blow out Indians to remain unbeaten

The Logan Elm High School football team pounded visiting Canal Winchester 36-10 on Friday, Oct. 14, in a key MSL-Buckeye Division game.

The Braves improved to 8-0 overall and 5-0 in the MSL-Buckeye, while the Indians dropped to 5-3 and 3-2.

Logan Elm quarterback Anthony Vagnier was 13-for-22 passing for 215 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 83 yards and two scores on 27 carries.

“Anthony’s been on like this all year,” Logan Elm coach Scott Bartholomew said. “This was a big game for us because it’s our last home game and we were looking to eliminate someone from the league title race.”

The Indians took a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter when Alex Fox tossed a 5-yard touchdown pass to Landon Yeartie.

But Canal Winchester’s offense struggled overall, rushing for only 67 yards on 25 carries and turning the ball over four times to set up two of Logan Elm’s touchdowns.

“We turned the ball over too many times and made too many mistakes to beat a good team like Logan Elm,” Canal Winchester coach Shawn Hinkle said. “If we could have hung onto the football and played mistake-free, this would have been a different game.”

Vagnier led his team to a 16-10 halftime lead, as he tossed an 8-yard scoring pass to Cory Heeter late in the first quarter and scored on an 18-yard run early in the second quarter.

Late in the third quarter, Vagnier rolled to his right, shook off a defender in the backfield, ran back to his left and threw a 50-yard touchdown pass to Cody Heeter.

“That was a big play,” Vagnier said. “I was supposed to roll to the right, but I had pressure coming and I heard Cody calling for the ball, so I went back left and threw it to him.”

Two plays after Canal Winchester fumbled the ensuing kickoff, Vagnier threw a 33-yard scoring pass to Blake Riffle to give his team a 29-10 advantage with 57.5 seconds left in the third quarter.

Fox finished 7-for-26 passing for 112 yards and a score.

“We gave their offense a short field to work with too many times,” Hinkle said.
