The Westerville South High School football team used a dominating performance from running back Daxton Cates to defeat visiting Westerville North 42-14 in an OCC-Cardinal Division game on Friday, Oct. 14.
South improved to 5-3 overall and 4-1 in league play to boost its playoff hopes and remain atop the league standings. North — which has lost 33 consecutive games — fell to 0-8 overall and 0-5 in the league.
North dominated the time of possession, but the Warriors struggled to finish drives and their defense could not contain Cates, who ran for 182 yards on 18 carries and scored five touchdowns.
Cates said his 49-yard scoring run midway through the third quarter, which put South ahead 21-7, was just what the Wildcats needed in a close game.
“They were keeping up with us and that gave us some spirit and it felt really good,” Cates said. “Those are all my buddies over there. Their program used to be really good, so it does make me feel good to get the win.”
South took a 7-0 lead on its first possession as Cates scored on a 9-yard run to cap a two-play drive that covered 25 yards.
The Warriors responded, however, with an 11-play, 65-yard drive capped by running back Kory Watson’s 3-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 7 before a 1-yard scoring run by Cates put the Wildcats up 14-7 at halftime
Along with his 49-yard touchdown, Cates also had scoring runs of 21 and 5 yards.
Despite the win, South coach Rocky Pentello said it wasn’t the best performance for the Wildcats.
“There were too many penalties and we didn’t play real smart,” Pentello said. “I thought that our guys weren’t ready to go and their guys were ready to go.”
North quarterback B.J. Campfield scored on a 5-yard touchdown run on the Warriors’ opening possession of the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to 28-14, but South shut down the North offense the rest of the game.
South running back Noah Prentice added a 14-yard touchdown run to close the scoring.
