The Brookhaven High School football team won what could be the last game in school history.
The visiting Bearcats defeated Mifflin 48-18 on Friday, Oct. 28, in a City League-North Division game.
The Columbus City Schools recently released a report that stated Brookahven and two South Side elementary schools could be closed at the end of the school year.
If that’s the case, and the Bearcats don’t make the Division II playoffs, the program has played its last game.
According to projections, Brookhaven will finsih eighth in the Region 7 computer rankings if Orville defeates Wooster on Saturday, Oct. 29.
“The key for us was we were ready to play after last week’s loss,” Brookhaven coach Trevor White said of his team’s 21-14 loss to Beechcroft on Oct. 21. “We talked to the seniors and the team about bouncing back. The kids put in a great week of work and showed up and played.”
Brookhaven forced Mifflin quarterback Javonte Bing into four fumbles and an interception on five consecutive possessions to turn a 12-7 deficit after one quarter into a 48-12 lead after three quarters.
The Bearcats improved to 7-3 overall and 6-1 in league play.
Mifflin dropped to 8-2 and 5-2 and saw its playoff hopes end.

Also for the Bearcats, Antonio Bell rushed for 74 yards on nine carries, and Vincent Meek had 90 yards on nine attempts.
Blake McEwen rushed for 24 yards and one touchdown and also caught one pass for a touchdown.
Kevin Greenhow ran for a 47-yard touchdown and caught a pass for a 51-yard touchdown.
The Brookhaven defense also sacked Bing four times and held Mifflin running back Derrick Pope in check. Pope entered the game with 1,343 yards rushing and 24 touchdowns. Against the Bearcats, he was held to 28 yards on 12 carries.
The Punchers gained 115 yards and scored two touchdowns on their first two possessions but were held to 110 total yards the rest of the game. They didn’t score their third touchdown until late in the fourth quarter.
“Mifflin handled us on their first two drives,” White said. “Then we regrouped and our linebackers took over and we were able to hold them.”
Brookhaven finished with 339 yards rushing and 429 total yards.
The Brookhaven players and coaches joined in on a chant of, “The ‘Haven ain’t dead. The ‘Haven ain’t dead’ after their postgame meeting and ran to their locker room for perhaps the last time.
