Football Week 10 Recap
Marysville 33, Dublin Scioto 10
Monarchs send Irish to worst finish in program history
The Marysville High School football team has the tools to punish opponents with a big and physical offensive line that can wear down defenses.
The Monarchs were able to do that in a 33-10 win over visiting Dublin Scioto on Friday, Oct. 28. But it was quarterback Connor Devine who used his arm to finish off drives.
The senior was 4-for-8 passing for 94 yards with touchdowns of 10, 10 and 46 yards.
“When you run the ball, play-action can make it difficult (for the opposing defense),” Marysville coach Jeff Gafford said. “On that last touchdown, they were trying to stop a short-yardage situation. Connor made a good check when they all loaded up on the run.”
Marysville finished 6-4 overall and 4-3 in the OCC-Cardinal Division to tie Dublin Jerome for fourth place. Olentangy Liberty, Westerville Central and Westerville South shared the title at 5-2.
The Irish finished 2-8 and 1-6. It marked the worst finish for Scioto, which opened in 1995 with a Division II state championship.
“They’re very big up front and we needed to score when we had opportunities, and we didn’t do that,” Scioto coach Karl Johnson said. “I know these seniors wanted to go out better than this. It’s disappointing no matter how many ways you cut it.”
Scioto had four turnovers, including a fumble and interception in Marysville territory.
Devine’s 10-yard touchdown pass to Nick Mazza with 4 minutes, 38 seconds left in the second quarter gave the Monarchs a 14-3 lead. His 10-yard touchdown pass to Zach LaRoche with 26 seconds left in the first half boosted the lead to 21-3.
Marysville made it 33-3 when Noah Arbogast caught a 46-yard touchdown pass from Devine with 8:13 to play.
Austin Pfarr led Marysville’s rushing attack with 111 yards on 19 carries. Joseph Boyd carried 12 times for 84 yards. Each scored a touchdown.
William Houston rushed for 80 yards on 20 carries for Scioto. He scored on a 4-yard run with 1:02 left.
