The Hartley High School football team completed its first perfect regular season and earned the CCL-Gold Division championship by beating Ready 42-12 on Friday, Oct. 28, at Dublin Scioto.

It also marked the final game for Ready’s Larry Wolf, who announced his retirement from coaching after the game.

Running back Ja’Wuan Woodley finished with 166 yards and two touchdowns, Jarrod Zang rushed for 81 yards and one touchdown and also had a scoring catch, and Marcellus Calhoun added 60 yards and one touchdown rushing to lead the Hawks.

Hartley takes a 9-0 record into the Division IV playoffs in Region 14.

“We’re incredibly proud to be the first team from Hartley to go undefeated,” coach Brad Burchfield said. “It means a lot to our kids. They made us work every inch of the way to get it.”

Woodley’s 44-yard scoring run with 8 minutes, 39 seconds left in the opening quarter, but Ready answered with an 80-yard drive that ended with a 1-yard touchdown by Bo Hardy.

An 8-yard scoring run by Calhoun made it 14-6 with 11:55 to go in the first half.

The Silver Knights then cut it to 14-12 when Gregg Yoho returned an interception 38 yards for a touchdown with 7:51 left before halftime.

The Hawks took momentum into the second half, however, when quarterback Jared Brandewie hooked up with Jacob Matuska for a 12-yard touchdown with 21 seconds to go in the second quarter. A key play on the drive was a 27-yard reception by Dominique Scott.

During the second half, a defense led by Kalil Morris and touchdown runs of 54 yards by Zang and 37 yards by Woodley turned the game into a rout for Hartley.
“We came out a little slow, but we came out and got it done in the end,” Morris said.

Hardy rushed for 156 yards and one touchdown and added two receptions for 52 yards to lead Ready.

The Silver Knights finished with a 4-6 record, marking their second consecutive losing season but just the third overall in 14 seasons under Wolf.

“Tonight the effort was superb,” Wolf said. “Bishop Hartley has got great athletes and I felt like our athletes hung in there. This is my last game at Bishop Ready, but I’ll always bleed silver and blue.”
