Football Week 10 Recap

Olentangy 56, Westerville North 12

Braves hand Warriors 35th consecutive loss

The Olentangy High School football team used a solid running game and strong defense to defeat Westerville North 56-12 on Friday, Oct. 28, in the season finale for both teams.

“This division is so difficult and a lot of it is about matchups,” said Olentangy coach Ed Terwilliger, whose team finished 5-5 overall and 4-3 in the OCC-Cardinal Division. “Our season has gone that way. When we have matched up well with people, we played well. And when we didn’t match up, it was difficult to defend some people.”

North lost its 35th consecutive game to finish 0-10 and 0-7.

The Braves’ running game led the way. Olentangy averaged 10.6 yards a carry and outrushed North 264-45 in the first half. Joshua Perry rushed for 195 yards and touchdowns of 11, 56 and 1 yard on 17 carries. He picked up his 1,000th yard rushing on a 1-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

Olentangy’s Derrick Rodgers had a 5-yard touchdown run to open the scoring. Two plays into the ensuing possession, linebacker Tim Feasel sacked Warriors quarterback B.J. Campfield and stripped the ball as the two were falling. The turnover set up the Braves on the North 40-yard line and seven plays later, Rodgers plunged in from a yard out.

“It’s either feast or famine with Timmy,” Terwilliger said jokingly of Feasel, whose father, Donald, played for Terwilliger when he was an assistant at Groveport in 1987.

“He has to overcome a little bit of his genetics. He plays hard and he plays fast. He made the play that caused the fumble, but then he also jumped and allowed (North running back Logan Hansford to break free on a 55-yard touchdown run).”

“My dad always tells me to go full speed no matter what,” Feasel said. “I tried to do that.”

Outside of Hansford’s touchdown run, the Braves didn’t allow North to get much established. In the second half, North didn’t pick up a first down until the final 1 minute, 30 seconds.

“We knew tonight was going to be difficult to stop them not only because of the size of their line, but of their backfield,” Warriors coach Mike Owens said. “They executed extremely well. But I am really proud of our kids. They didn’t show any signs of quitting. That’s all we can ask out of them.”
