Football Playoffs - Division IV, Region 14 First Round

Hartley 42, North Union 14

Woodley scores five TDs as Hartley rolls past Wildcats

The Hartley High School football team won its 17th consecutive game and advanced to the second round of the Division IV, Region 14 playoffs with a 42-14 victory over visiting North Union on Saturday, Nov. 5.

Ja’Wuan Woodley rushed for five touchdowns for the Hawks, who will play fellow unbeaten Pemberville Eastwood on Saturday, Nov. 12, at a site to be determined. Hartley is 10-0 and Eastwood is 11-0.

North Union finished 9-2 but slipped to 0-3 in playoff games.

“We just came out and listened to our coach,” Woodley said. “It’s all our (offensive) line. They work hard every day.”

Woodley did much of the work in terms of yardage, as he finished with 244 on the ground. Hartley piled up 394 yards overall.

The Hawks took a 7-0 lead on a 19-yard scoring run by Woodley with 6 minutes, 38 seconds left in the opening quarter.

The Wildcats answered with a 2-yard scoring run by Josh Smith with 11:24 to go in the second quarter, but the Hawks put together two more scoring drives before halftime to take control.

With 7:45 left in the second period, Woodley ran for a 4-yard score to make it 14-7. After the Hartley defense put together a goal-line stand late in the second period, quarterback Jared Brandewie hit Matt Simpson for a 56-yard touchdown on the final play before halftime to make it 21-7.

Woodley ran for a 59-yard touchdown with 11:20 to go in the third quarter and added a 3-yard scoring run with 3:47 left in the period to make it 35-7.

After North Union cut it to 35-14 on a 17-yard touchdown pass from Josh Souder to Kam Smith, the Hawks used a special-teams play to set up their final touchdown.

On fourth-and-4 from the North Union 47, Woodley took a direct snap on a fake punt and ran 42 yards. He scored four plays later on a 1-yard run.

“We know (Woodley’s) good,” coach Brad Burchfield said. “You’re playing good people when you get to the playoffs, and I thought we played better in the second half.”
