Football Playoffs - Div. III, Region 10 Semifinal

Elida 24, DeSales 21

Stallions eliminated by Bulldogs’ late field goal

By

CLAYTON -- There were four touchdowns and one field goal during the fourth quarter of the DeSales High School football team’s 24-21 loss to Elida on Friday, Nov. 11, in a Division III, Region 10 semifinal at Clayton Northmont, but another play had just as much impact.

On fourth-and-7 from the Stallions’ 34-yard line with 1 minute, 38 seconds remaining, a pass attempt by Bulldogs quarterback Reggie McAdams went out of the hands of Brandon Stinson near the end zone.

But the Stallions were called for roughing the passer, and Elida took advantage of the call by winning the game four plays later on a 27-yard field goal by Nathan Jenkins as time expired.

DeSales finished 7-4, while the Bulldogs improved to 9-3 and advanced to a regional final Nov. 18 against Eastmoor Academy.

“It was a hard-fought game by both teams, and it’s difficult to swallow getting a call like that,” Stallions coach Ryan Wiggins said. “That play at the end of the game was bad officiating. They decided the game. I’m going to fight for my players, and I thought the officials kind of decided the game.”

During the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, McAdams ran for a 36-yard touchdown, DeSales’ J.T. Blubaugh had a 35-yard scoring run, McAdams hit Jeremy Newby for an 80-yard touchdown pass and the Stallions’ Warren Ball ran for a 3-yard score.

McAdams finished 22-for-42 passing for 301 yards with one touchdown and rushed for 47 yards and one score.

Ball had 31 rushes for 154 yards and two touchdowns, Blubaugh had 73 yards rushing and wide receiver Charles Chandler had four catches for 137 yards.

The roughing-the-passer call was one of five penalties that DeSales had for 58 yards.

“The second half, we left it all out there,” Stallions quarterback Alex Perrine said. “We got behind (twice in the fourth quarter), and that’s what happens.”
