The Columbus Academy boys basketball team jumped out to a 20-9 lead after the first quarter on its way to a 91-72 win over Horizon Science Academy in a Division III district final March 8 at the Fairgrounds Coliseum.
The second-seeded Vikings improved to 20-4 and advanced to play Middletown Fenwick or St. Bernard Roger Bacon in a regional semifinal at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 14, at Kettering Fairmont.
Horizon Science finished 14-9.
“No time for wild celebration,” Academy coach Chris Jones said after his team captured its eighth district championship. “We don’t feel like our business is done.”
Academy shot 66.1 percent from the field against Horizon Science. Senior Zach Ratcliff led the Vikings with 30 points, followed by Daniel Aronowitz with 20, Jacob Mikalov with 17 and Tim Eldridge with 15.
“This feels great,” Mikalov said. “I think we can go even further in regionals. I’m excited for it.”
Julian Johnson led Horizon Science with 20 points, followed by Antonio Blount with 19, Elijah Mills with 11 and Damani Barnes with 10.
“We did a lot of things well, but we’re still in search of a perfect game and we didn’t quite have that (against Horizon Science),” Jones said. “Defensively, there are still a lot of things we need to do. This was one of the goals that we wanted to accomplish along the way, but we still have some higher goals in mind. We’re getting it done, but business is still unfinished.”
Academy lost to Heath 62-57 in double overtime in a district final last season.
