The Worthington Christian High School boys basketball team’s surprising Division III tournament run ended March 14 with a 57-40 loss to Lima Central Catholic in a regional semifinal at Bowling Green.
Brooks Weygandt scored 19 points for the Warriors, who upset No. 1-ranked Bloom-Carroll in a district final March 8 and finished 15-9.
Lima Central Catholic improved to 22-2 and will play Ottawa-Glandorf in a regional final Friday, March 16, at Bowling Green.
“Physically we were ready, but mentally we broke down a little,” coach Kevin Weakley said. “They just played us man-to-man and did a good job of taking our strengths away. They made us work pretty hard.”
Worthington Christian led 7-0, but the Thunderbirds went on a 21-2 run and were ahead 26-11 at halftime. The Warriors cut their deficit to 38-28 by the end of the third quarter and pulled within seven points early in the fourth quarter but would get no closer.
The Warriors shot just 18-for-52 from the floor, including 4-for-19 from 3-point range.
Billy Taflinger and John Kidd each scored 11 points for the Thunderbirds.
“They did play tough defense on us and just shot extremely well in the second quarter,” said Kyle Wade, one of six seniors for the Warriors. “They were the first opponent since (late January) to shoot better than 50 percent against us. Our offense just couldn’t get going.”
