The Brookhaven High School boys basketball team lost the battle down low and fell to Sandusky Perkins 67-61 in a Division II regional semifinal March 15 at the University of Toledo.
Led by 6-foot-7 Michael Ebert in the post, the Pirates outscored the Bearcats 18-8 during the third quarter and led by as many as 15 points.
Perkins, which improved to 23-2 and will play for a regional title at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 17, against Cleveland Benedictine or Elida, held off a late rally by Brookhaven.
The Bearcats, who finished 19-6, rallied to within five points during the final period but would get no closer.
“The difference was that they got easy looks at the bucket and we were not able to answer,” Brookhaven coach Hali Robinson said. “We didn’t finish plays and it cost us, and we were outscored in the post 20-2. Ebert was a great post player.”
Perkins guard Nic Williams scored a game-high 25 points and Ebert scored 20.
Junior guard Randal Clarkson had 24 points and senior guard Khalid King scored 19 for Brookhaven, but King fouled out early in the fourth quarter.
The game was tied at 10 after one period and Perkins led 21-20 at halftime before taking control.
“One of the things that Perkins did was at the end of the game, they knocked down their free throws,” Clarkson said.
