Jared Drake had quite a debut with the Westerville Central High School football team, totaling 241 yards and scoring two touchdowns to lead the visiting Warhawks to a 27-0 win over Big Walnut on Aug. 24 in the season opener.
Drake, a junior who transferred from Upper Arlington during the summer, completed six of 10 passes for 120 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 121 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries. He also had an interception from his defensive back position.
“The only thing I knew about Jared before he came here was that he was a defense guy,” Central coach John Magistro said. “He wanted an opportunity to play quarterback and obviously we gave him that opportunity. What a competitor he is.”
Drake scored on a 20-yard run with 5 minutes, 13 seconds left the first quarter to give Central a 7-0 lead. He connected with wide receiver Charlie Mousey on a 30-yard touchdown pass with 3:46 left in the second quarter to extend the lead to 14-0, then scored on a 57-yard run early in the third quarter to make it 21-0.
Running back Alex Fisher added a 3-yard touchdown run and gained 119 yards on 18 carries.
“These guys have been on a mission since December when we hit the weight room,” Magistro said. “I’m very proud of the effort and the leadership. … We came out and were clicking pretty good (on offense) and our defense took over.”
Big Walnut played without its starting quarterback, senior Carson Chatterton, who was sidelined with mononucleosis. Sophomore Jordan Wall made his first varsity start, completing five of eight passes for 79 yards before leaving the game late in the first half with concussion-like symptoms. He was replaced by junior Chaz Leavitt.
The Golden Eagles were held to 108 total yards.
“I’m proud of my kids,” Big Walnut coach Joe Weaver said. “They played their tails off. Westerville Central is a good football team. They’re big, strong and fast, but there are some things we have to fix.”
