Dublin Coffman 48, Dublin Jerome 6

Shamrocks overwhelm Celtics in first meeting

The long-anticipated matchup between the Dublin Coffman and Dublin Jerome high school football teams was never in doubt Aug. 24 at Jerome.

Coffman took a 13-0 lead in the first quarter on the way to a 48-6 win in the opener for both teams and the first meeting between the programs.

Shamrocks senior running back Bilal Williamson rushed for 214 yards and four touchdowns on 24 carries. He had 119 yards and two touchdowns in the first half.

Coffman senior quarterback James Walsh, an Ohio University recruit, completed 10 of 15 passes for 83 yards and had a 5-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

“We talked about it during the week about us never playing each other before,” Coffman coach Mark Crabtree said. “We weren’t quite sure what to expect. We got off to probably exactly the way we wanted to as far as the kind of start. We made a ton of mistakes. We have a lot of room to improve.”

Coffman limited Jerome’s top threat, senior running back and Georgia Tech recruit Donovan Wilson, to 27 yards on nine carries in the first half. He finished with 103 yards on 25 carries.

Jerome moved the ball into Coffman territory for the first time early in the third quarter, advancing to the Shamrocks’ 11-yard line. However, Juan Jennings intercepted a Jake King pass to end the threat.

Williamson followed with touchdowns runs of 78 and 9 yards, and Brent Whitehead added a 30-yard interception return for a score to push the lead to 48-0 early in the fourth quarter.

Jerome avoided the shutout when King connected with Mitchel Keller for a 29-yard touchdown with 6 minutes, 55 seconds remaining in the game.

“Mark (Crabtree) made a couple comments that this is probably one of the best teams he’s ever had and I would say from the way they played I might have to agree with that,” Jerome coach Mark Hundley said. “We saw them on film and we thought we could do a little bit more offensively. We knew their offense was going to move the ball as similar as what we saw here, but their defense just played so well.”
