Wildcats use air attack to blow out Cruisers
The Westerville South High School football team went on the road on Aug. 24 and routed Groveport 55-14 in the season opener.
The Wildcats’ passing attack shredded the Cruisers’ defense, as quarterback Nick Renzetti completed 18 of 25 passes for 378 yards and four touchdowns, Garry Brown had 10 catches for 202 yards and two scores, and Jalen Bell had four catches for 154 yards and a touchdown.
“We used a read offense and our guys read their defense well,” Westerville South coach Rocky Pentello said. “We have good athletes on the outside and Nick did a good job of getting them the ball.”
The Cruisers took a 7-0 lead just 13 seconds into the game when quarterback Mecca Swain broke loose for a 65-yard touchdown run.
But the Wildcats outgained Groveport 375 yards to 45 yards throughout the rest of the first and second quarters while building a 41-7 halftime lead.
Noah Prentiss, who rushed for 77 yards on 14 carries, scored touchdowns on runs of 1 and 5 yards to make it 14-7.
Renzetti connected with Bell on a 70-yard touchdown pass to put South ahead 21-7, and he also tossed touchdown passes of 34 and 85 yards to Brown in the second quarter.
After giving up 65 yards on the first play from scrimmage, South’s defense gave up only 87 yards throughout the rest of the first three quarters.
“I just don’t think our guys were very focused on the first play,” Pentello said. “After that, our defense did a good job of running to the ball real fast.”
